Successful Sight word instruction begins with repetition. The goal of teaching sight words is students will read these words without sounding them out. AUTOMATICITY. When the word is flashed in front of them they can read it quickly, in about 3 seconds. It is also important to remember that students must be able to recognize sight words in the context of the books they read. Teaching Sight Words Day 2…
Sight Word Instruction Day 2
Sight word instruction Day 2 is almost the same as Day 1. On Day 2 students generate their own sight word sentences. It is important to remember that sight word instruction is about constant repetition.
We read the sight words on the board together using the sight word PowerPoint. As each letter appears on the screen, the students say the letter and then after all the letters have appeared they say the word. After we have read our sight words, l go back to the beginning and show my students the sight word. Then I tell them a sentence using the sight word. I then ask my students to use the sight word in a sentence. I give students a model of my expectations. When beginning sight word instruction students give simple 3 or more word sentences. And that is ok. I want my students to begin to apply what they are learning in sentences that use their words and thoughts. For my English Language Learners it is okay for them to repeat a sentence they have already heard, from either myself or a classmate. I only ask for a few examples and then we move on the the next word. This activity takes about 5 minutes. The first time you introduce sight word sentences, it may take a little longer. Once students understand the expectation then it moves along swiftly.
Small Group Instruction
Small group Instruction looks the same also as Day 1. I review and introduce sight words in small group setting during guided reading time. I really like choosing at least 2 different sight word instructions activities per day to introduce and review sight words. The Guided Reading activities that I like to use are Mix and Fix, Table Writing, What’s Missing and Sight Word Flash Cards.
I do not begin to give the students word work until they have mastered at least a few sight words. I will share word work activities in a later post.
