Before the school year begins I am enjoying some mommy-son time with my little guy. He has been obsessed with learning about Outer Space lately, so I have begun a mini-study unit about the Outer Space. We began by discussing the moon. I made these Nomenclature cards that he can cut out and put in order to show the phases of the moon. You can download the cards for free here. The cards can be used to put the phases of the moon in correct order, and I have included some vocabulary words pertaining to the moon.
We began the unit by just reviewing what he knew about the moon. We watched a video from BrainPop Jr on the moon. BrainPop Jr is a paid website, but they have the best videos for young and older children. We watched this video, and then we made this craft. It was a lot of fun. I also saw crafts where you can eat an Oreo cookie to look like the phases of the moon. We read a simple reader that discussed the phases of the moon and how the moon orbits around the earth. The link to the reader also has books suggestion that you can read about the moon.
I was really excited about the Nomenclature cards that I created. Nomenclature cards gives your child the correct vocabulary for words. Using the correct vocabulary while teaching your child new words helps your child label and recognize and learn new words. This method is used by Montessori programs. I like using real pictures/photographs and correct vocabulary to teach children higher level vocabulary. I will create cards to go along with the rest of our Solar System unit.
Our mini-unit also includes a trip to the Museum to see a Solar System exhibit and trips to the library to check out books on the solar system.
